Meet Debbie
For Debbie Meyers-Martin, public service has never been about politics—it has always been about people.
Born and raised in Chicago and a proud Southland resident for more than four decades, Debbie has dedicated her life to creating stronger communities, expanding opportunities, and ensuring every family has a voice. As a mother, community leader, and public servant, she understands the challenges families face because she has spent her career working alongside them—not above them.
Before being elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2018, Debbie made history as the first African American woman elected Mayor of Olympia Fields. Her leadership has always been rooted in collaboration, bringing residents, businesses, and community partners together to solve problems and move communities forward. She has also served in leadership roles throughout the South Suburbs, including as President of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association, building relationships that continue to benefit the communities she represents today.
Since taking office in Springfield, Debbie has remained focused on what matters most: delivering results for the people of the 38th District. Whether helping seniors access critical services, supporting veterans, advocating for quality education, strengthening public safety, expanding economic opportunities, or assisting families navigating state government, Debbie believes every constituent deserves a representative who listens, responds, and takes action.
Debbie’s leadership is defined by accessibility, integrity, and a genuine commitment to service. She believes that government should be responsive, transparent, and accountable to the people it serves. That is why her office has helped thousands of residents connect with resources, solve problems, and navigate some of life’s most difficult challenges.
A graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago and a proud union member, Debbie continues to champion policies that strengthen working families, create opportunity for future generations, and build safer, healthier communities throughout the Southland.
